The Civil Aviation Safety Authority will host a free aviation safety seminar in Murwillumbah on Thursday, 7 May 2026.

The session, titled “Time to decide”, will be held at Murwillumbah Aero Club on Airfield Avenue.

CASA is focusing on pilot decision-making, which remains a major safety issue in aviation.

The seminar will help pilots make the right call at the right time before and during flights.

Aviation safety advisor Tim Penney said pilots make decisions in every part of a flight.

“When flying, a pilot makes decisions in every action before and during a flight, including pre-flight planning and go/no-go decisions,” Tim says.

Why it matters?

Poor decision-making continues to be a leading cause of aircraft accidents worldwide.

CASA’s seminar is designed to help pilots understand how decisions are made under pressure.

It will also cover the factors that can affect a pilot’s thinking and actions in the cockpit.

“Different types of decision-making have different impacts in the cockpit, plus there are a range of factors that affect a pilot’s thinking and actions,” Tim says.

The Murwillumbah seminar gives local pilots a free chance to refresh their safety knowledge close to home.

It is open to everyone, from novice flyers to experienced pilots.

Refreshments will also be provided, making the evening accessible for local aviation community members.

Gold Coast childcare giant G8 Education is set to close 40 childcare centres.

The Varsity Lakes-headquartered company announced the move at its annual general meeting after the company posted a net loss of $303.3 million for 2025.

The company operates around 400 childcare centres throughout Australia, employing 8800 people to care for 36,000 children a week.

Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Pejman Okhovat said occupancy at its childcare centres was falling in 2026, with year-to-date attendance 7.9 per cent lower than in 2025.

Mr Okhovat said that the company would suspend “the operation of approximately 40 centres” to counter the problem.

“Our network optimisation framework identifies challenged and underperforming centres, and these have been exacerbated by the current macro conditions,’’ Mr Okhovat said.

“G8 Education’s immediate focus remains supporting families to transition to one of its nearby centres and redeploying team members, where possible.

“G8 Education will then consider longer term options for those centres including lease surrender, divestment or other alternative.”

The company is also looking to reduce costs through purchases and restructuring its support offices.

“While decisions like these are never easy, it is absolutely the right thing to do to achieve the outcomes I have just outlined to you,’’ he said.

Mr Okhovat said G8 Education’s priorities were clear.

“Child safety and paramountcy sit at the core of our culture and governance and underpin every decision we make,’’ he said.

Business owners are being urged to submit entries to the 2026 Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards, which were officially launched last week.

Deputy Mayor Cr Mark Hammel officially launched the 2026 Awards at a ceremony attended by a Who’s Who list of Gold Coast business community at the Sea World Resort.

Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards president Adam Twemlow said the awards were not just a reflection of company successes but a testament to the vibrant Gold Coast community.

“The awards, which are now in their 31st year, are about rewarding those business operators who are the best in their fields,’’ Mr Twemlow said.

“For the companies and their staff who are recognised, these awards serve as a powerful motivator.

“They open up new business avenues, enhance marketing opportunities and enable companies to proudly position themselves as award-winning entities.

“This recognition also provides our businesses with the reputational boost to attract and retain top-tier talent, offering a viable alternative to traditional powerhouses like Melbourne and Sydney.”

Mr Twemlow said the city’s economy had been transformed in the 31 years since the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards were founded to honour family businesses.

“The Gold Coast has changed from its origins as an agricultural centre and then its emergence as a tourism capital, to today, where it has a robust and diversified economy that is no longer subject to a boom-bust economy,’’ said Mr Twemlow.

“The city now is also a leader in health, in education and in advanced manufacturing, such as our exceptionally strong marine industry in the city’s north.”

“To recognise the increasing diversification of our regional economy, we now offer business honours in 15 different award categories.”

Mr Twemlow said 2026 was shaping up to be a challenging year for the economy, but he was sure leading Gold Coast businesses would thrive.

He said the committee behind the awards was committed to running the awards in recognition of the perseverance and strength of the business community.

“Every year the quality of the entrants becomes even more impressive, the competition to win one of the awards becomes tougher, and the array of industries from which the businesses come is increasingly diverse,’’ said Mr Twemlow.

A Gold Coast student has won a Subaru WRX through a national giveaway run by Australian tyre retailer Ozzy Tyres.

Zabdiel “Zee” Belachew found out he had won while he was on a bus during a school excursion.

Before he gets behind the wheel, his father Abdul has set one clear rule. Zee must complete a defensive driving course first.

The WRX will also be kept as a weekend car. Zee already drives his own ute to school.

Why It Matters?

The win is a major moment for Zee and his family, but it also puts young driver safety in focus.

Zee said he almost missed the moment his name was called.

“I was watching the live stream and turned it off because I didn’t think I was going to win,” Zee says. “Then I got a phone call. I told everyone on the bus to be quiet while I answered. When I picked up, they told me I’d won the WRX. I was shocked. I kept messaging them afterwards trying to confirm it was legit.”

His parents were also unsure at first.

“They thought it might have been a scam, or I’d won tyres rather than the actual car. But when I showed them the video of the live stream with my name being called, they believed me.”

For Abdul, the excitement came with a parent’s instinct to protect.

“This is an incredible win - Zee is absolutely over the moon,” Abdul says. “But before he gets behind the wheel of the WRX, he’ll be completing a defensive driving course. It’s a powerful car, and he’s only 17, so I want to make sure he’s properly prepared.”

The Gold Coast win has given Zee a dream car moment, while also keeping safe driving front and centre.

Abdul said his concern was not Zee’s attitude, but the driving environment around him.

“Zee is a responsible young man - my concern isn’t him, it’s the environment around him and other drivers who may try to engage him,” Abdul says. “This is something special for him to enjoy responsibly.”

Zee said his parents would be the first people he would take for a drive.

“My parents. I’m genuinely grateful for everything they’ve done for me, so it only feels right that they’re the first.”

After that, he hopes to take the WRX into the Gold Coast hinterland.

“I want to take it up to Tamborine Mountain - just a long drive to enjoy the car, take in the views and see how it handles through the turns. Windows down, hear the turbo spool.”

“I used to own a Supra, so it brings back some great memories. Seeing your son this happy is something special, especially knowing it’s a Japanese performance car.”

“We didn’t expect 20,000 entries, but honestly, it makes sense. Car culture in Australia is massive and people love the idea of winning something that actually means something. A WRX isn’t just a car. For a 17-year-old kid, it’s everything.”

A rare LEGO collection found in a storage shed has become a major auction event through Lloyds Auctions.

The sale began as an accidental find. It has since grown into a large auction series featuring rare and limited-edition LEGO pieces.

Lloyds Auctions said the collection is still growing, with more stock being processed and added.

“This collection just keeps on building,” said Lee Hames, Chief Operations Officer at Lloyds Auctions.

1. One Big Thing: Local rugby star loses $7 million fight with corporate referee

What’s Happening: Gold Coast-dwelling rugby union star turned financial industry figure Mark Swanepoel has lost his long-running battle with the corporate referee.

Why It Matters: The Southern African-born former Brumbies player and his lending network, Cigno Australia, and their business associates have been ordered to pay a whopping multi-million-dollar penalty after the Federal Court ruled they operated high-fee payday loan schemes without a licence.

Zoom In: The penalty orders follow the findings of the Federal Court on 24 May 2024 of breaches of the Credit Act by Cigno Australia and BSF Solutions through their use of the No Upfront Charge Loan Model and involvement in those breaches by Mr Swanepoel and Brenton Harrison, fellow director.

The judgment ends the case launched in 2023 by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission against Cigno Australia and BSF Solutions, along with Mr Swanepoel and Mr Harrison.

Why It Matters: These burns are a key tool to reduce bushfire risk and maintain biodiversity, especially as South East Queensland edges into another dry season.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, we are expecting below-average May to July rainfall for areas of eastern and south-west Australia.

What’s happening?

Two unlicensed fishers and a South Brisbane restaurant owner have been prosecuted and fined almost $30,000 over the illegal sale and possession of mud crabs.

The matter was heard in Brisbane Magistrates Court after an investigation by Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers.

Officers uncovered illegal, unreported and unlawful fishing activity after identifying unlicensed fishers supplying mud crabs to a Brisbane restaurant.

The three defendants were charged under the Fisheries Act 1994. One unlicensed fisher was fined $3,000, another was fined $9,500, and the restaurant owner received the largest fine of $17,000.

Department of Primary Industries Deputy Director-General, Fisheries and Forestry, Pauline Jacob, said the result sent a strong message.

“This strong compliance action is proof that our laws will be effectively enforced and that Queenslanders can be confident that wrongdoers will be caught and punished,” Ms Jacob said.

Why it matters?

The case reinforces that selling recreational catch is illegal and that restaurants can also face penalties for buying seafood unlawfully.

Ms Jacob said, “Nobody is above the law - it is illegal for recreational or unlicensed fishers to sell their catch, and restaurants will be held accountable for sourcing seafood unlawfully.”

She said illegal trade also harms the wider industry.

“This type of activity undermines the sustainable management of our fisheries and disadvantages law-abiding commercial fishers,” she said.

That matters because Queensland’s seafood industry depends on legal harvesting, fair trade and public trust.

A reminder that unlawful seafood can enter local supply chains.

It also puts fresh focus on where restaurants source seafood and how closely buyers check their suppliers.

Consumers are being urged to pay closer attention as well. The Department said unusually cheap seafood on a menu can be a red flag.

The prosecution also sends a warning to local operators that authorities are watching both ends of the supply chain, from the catch to the plate.

• The court imposed $29,500 in total fines, with $17,000 issued to the restaurant owner and $12,500 shared by the two fishers.

• Officers identified 48 mud crabs that had been sold illegally, which formed the core of the prosecution's case.

• Another two female mud crabs and two undersized barred javelin were also uncovered during the investigation.

Evidence presented to the court also included interference with another fisher’s mud crab pots.

The Oceanview track in Burleigh Head National Park is closed from Monday, 20 April to Friday, 1 May 2026.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is carrying out repair works, weather permitting, after damage was caused earlier this year.

The closure follows a routine shutdown in February, when heavy rain destabilised the slope and damaged part of the track.

During the works, the Rainforest circuit will remain open for walkers.

Why it matters?

The Oceanview track winds around a rocky headland and is exposed to environmental impacts.

In February, heavy rain made the slope unstable and caused major damage to the walking track and fencing.

The temporary closure is aimed at protecting public safety while repairs are completed.

Local Impact

Locals and visitors will need to use other walking options in the park while the Oceanview track is shut.

The Rainforest circuit will stay open, giving people another way to enjoy Burleigh Head National Park during the closure.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is also warning people not to enter the closed area.

Rangers and Queensland Police Service staff may direct people on site, and visitors are being told to follow all signage.

• The closure is scheduled to run for 12 days, from 20 April to 1 May 2026, while repair works are carried out.

• Two boulders weighing more than 3000 kilograms each came loose during heavy rain in February, damaging the track and fencing.

• A $667 fine applies to anyone who enters the closed area during the repair period.

That damage is now being addressed through the planned repair works.

What’s Happening: A well-known Coolangatta businessman has been banned from managing companies for five years after his ventures collapsed owing millions to creditors.

Why It Matters: ASIC’s crackdown highlights growing scrutiny on directors doing the wrong thing, particularly in industries like construction and labour hire that are critical across the Gold Coast’s fast-growing economy.

By the Numbers

• The four companies involved included:

  • Quality Corporate Management Pty Ltd

  • Carnz Restaurant Services Pty Ltd

  • Complete Home and Marine Pty Ltd

  • All Concrete SLD Pty Ltd

• $3 million+ was owed to creditors across four companies

• $1 million+ was unpaid to the Australian Tax Office

• There were $19 million in unrecorded financial transactions

Zoom In: At the time of ASIC’s decision, the four companies owed millions to creditors, including the Australian Tax Office.

The corporate watchdog, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, has now banned Mr Parker from managing corporations until March 24, 2031.

4. Brisbane 2032 could Bring Air Taxis

What’s Happening: A new partnership between Alt Air, Eve Air Mobility and Skyports is planning an electric air taxi network across Queensland and New South Wales, with Brisbane 2032 in its sights.

Why It Matters: This pushes air taxis beyond hype into real-world planning, with routes, vertiports and integration now being mapped for South East Queensland’s growing transport network.

By the Numbers:

• 50 prototype test flights have been completed by Eve as of April 2026

• 2 states, Queensland and New South Wales, have been included in the proposed network rollout

• The initiative has 56 years of aerospace backing via Embraer, one of the world’s aerospace industry leaders, operating in the Commercial Aviation, Executive Jets, Defence and Security, and Services & Support segments.

Local Impact: As a potential lasting legacy of the 2032 Games, for the Gold Coast, the city that mind-blowingly decided to build three-quarters of a full tram line before calling it quits, this could mean faster links to Brisbane and Sunshine Coast airports and the broader east coast as a whole.

From roads to runways (sort of): Rather than starting from scratch, the plan blends existing airports with new vertiports, potentially fast-tracking early rollout ahead of the Games.
