Student leaders from five Tweed Coast schools have joined a long-term environmental restoration program at Stockland Kings Forest.

The students marked National Tree Day by planting native vegetation on Monday, 27 July. The event supported the rehabilitation of land previously used as a commercial pine plantation.

Students attended from Kingscliff Public School, St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School and Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School. Leaders from Cudgen Public School and Bogangar Public School also took part.

Biodiversity Australia is delivering the current works package. The fully Indigenous-owned environmental management business has led ecological restoration projects across Australia for more than two decades.

Why it matters?

The rehabilitation program combines natural bush regeneration with the planting of locally native species. This work will return the former plantation land to native bushland while strengthening wildlife corridors across Kings Forest.

Selected plants include eucalypts, banksias, paperbarks, grass trees, sedges, rainforest trees and flowering shrubs. Together, they will recreate local ecosystems and provide food and shelter for native wildlife.

The restored habitat will support threatened species, including koalas and the Wallum Sedge Frog. It will also improve the health of local creeks, wetlands and surrounding bushland corridors.

Plant survival and growth will be independently monitored over several years. This will help ensure the regenerated bushland becomes healthy and self-sustaining.

Local Impact

Dedicated habitat zones will include koala food trees and stronger green links throughout the community. These connected areas will help wildlife move between feeding, shelter and breeding grounds.

The planting also gives local students a direct role in caring for the Tweed Coast environment. Their work will form part of the growing native landscape as Kings Forest develops.

The environmental program will support new housing while retaining extensive conservation and rehabilitation areas across the site.

“This first tree planting marks the beginning of a multi-year program to progressively restore over 300 hectares of native bushland across Kings Forest,” Mr Koerber said.

“It’s especially meaningful to see local students taking part and helping shape the future landscape of Kings Forest. Their contribution supports the restoration of native habitat and demonstrates the important role communities play in caring for the environment.”

Member for Tweed Geoff Provest welcomed Stockland’s environmental restoration work and its focus on habitat for local wildlife.

“Kings Forest is set to deliver new homes for many families in the years to come and the 30,000 native trees being planted will deliver native homes for a diverse array of wildlife families including our precious koalas,” Mr Provest said.

Kings Forest is an 869-hectare masterplanned community on the Tweed Coast. It will provide more than 4,000 homes for about 11,000 residents.

Plans include a town centre, schools, childcare, parks and sports facilities. The community will also contain 330 hectares of dedicated conservation and rehabilitation areas.

Kings Forest is minutes from Casuarina Beach, Kingscliff and the new Tweed Valley Hospital. Residents will have access to health, education, retail and employment centres.

The community also has road connections to Gold Coast Airport and the M1.

Gold Coast personal carer Mariana Brat is being celebrated ahead of Aged Care Employee Day.

Mariana works at Carinity Cedarbrook in Mudgeeraba, where she provides personal care and companionship to older residents. She also builds trusted relationships with residents, their families and other staff members.

What’s happening?

A dead petrel found on Moreton Island, also known as Mulgulpin, has tested positive for H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza (H5 bird flu). Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) rangers found the seabird before it underwent laboratory testing.

The CSIRO Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness confirmed the positive result. There have been no detections in poultry or evidence of large-scale animal deaths across Queensland.

Authorities said the risk to human health remains low. However, the community should continue reporting sick or dead wild birds.

Why it matters?

The detection confirms H5 bird flu has reached Queensland following cases in several other Australian states. Queensland has prepared for its arrival and has response arrangements in place.

Australia also has national measures for emergency animal disease incidents. These arrangements support surveillance, testing and public guidance when possible cases are reported.

People visiting or living near Moreton Island should remain alert for sick or dead seabirds and other wildlife. Anyone who finds an affected animal should avoid contact and keep children and pets away.

“We have known that a H5 bird flu detection in Queensland was a matter of when, not if,” Dr Crook said. “This confirmed positive result has not impacted our poultry sector or native wildlife.”

Dr Crook said surveillance had increased across Queensland, alongside activities to help industries and communities understand how to respond.

“We have further escalated our surveillance program throughout the state, and are delivering heightened H5 bird flu awareness and engagement activities to ensure industries and communities know what to do,” she said.

“There have been more than 1,000 reports from Queensland to the hotline since the first reported case on 20 June 2026, and I thank the public for their support. I encourage the community and industry to continue to be vigilant.”

Dr Crook also urged people not to touch sick or dead wildlife.

“If you find sick or dead wild birds or wildlife, avoid contact, keep children and pets away, record what you see, and report immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.”

Young cadets from Australia and New Zealand gathered at Canungra for the 2026 Chief of Army Cadet Team Challenge.

The national event ran last month from 6 to 11 July at Canungra Field Training Area, also known as Kokoda Barracks. It brought together leading Army, Navy and Air Force cadet teams for six days of demanding activities.

Participants worked in teams throughout the challenge, completing military-style tasks in a safe and controlled setting. Each activity tested their resilience, decision-making, leadership, cooperation and ability to remain focused under pressure.

The program reached its final stage on Friday, 10 July, when teams completed several physical challenges at Kokoda Barracks. The event concluded with a parade and closing ceremony on the barracks parade ground.

Why it matters?

The Chief of Army Cadet Team Challenge is the leading team competition within the Australian Army Cadets program.

It gives young people a national setting to apply the skills developed during their regular cadet training. Participants must communicate clearly, solve problems and support their teammates while completing unfamiliar and difficult tasks.

The challenge also places equal value on individual conduct and collective performance. Cadets must show Service, Courage, Respect, Integrity and Excellence throughout every part of the event.

These values guide how teams respond to pressure, manage setbacks and complete activities together. Results matter, but the challenge also recognises commitment, cooperation and personal development.

Local Impact

Canungra became the national meeting point for cadets representing Australian states, military services and New Zealand.

Kokoda Barracks provided the training grounds for the physical, mental and team-based activities. It also hosted the final parade, trophy presentation and closing address.

The event gave South East Queensland a central role in a major national cadet program. It also highlighted Canungra Field Training Area as a setting for leadership training and youth development.

• 170 cadets participated, including 160 Australians and 10 members of the New Zealand Cadet Forces.

• Teams of 10 completed activities requiring shared planning, communication, physical effort and problem-solving.

• Six days of competition ran from 6 to 11 July, with the final activities and ceremony held on 10 July.

The challenge tested much more than physical fitness. Cadets had to assess situations, make decisions and complete tasks while working closely with their teammates.

Each team faced activities designed to test leadership, resilience and cooperation. Success depended on how well members communicated and used their combined skills under pressure.

The range of participants also gave the event a broader military cadet focus. Thirteen Australian Army Cadet teams competed alongside Australian Navy Cadets and Australian Air Force Cadets.

A New Zealand Cadet Forces team also joined the event, adding an international element to the competition.

The final parade celebrated every cadet who completed the challenge. The Australian Air Force Cadets Band provided music during the ceremony, creating a formal close to the week.

Deputy Chief of Army Major General Chris Smith DSC AM CSC presented the Chief of Army Trophy. Queensland Assistant Minister to the Premier Dr Christian Rowan MP delivered the closing address.

South Queensland Brigade received the trophy after finishing first. South Australia Brigade placed second, while the New Zealand Cadet Forces finished third.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has confiscated cash seized at Gold Coast Airport during an ongoing money laundering investigation.

Police allege the money was divided between several bags carried by members of a family travelling together. Investigators linked a Victorian woman to the concealed cash.

Her partner later attended the airport and claimed ownership of the money. He was subsequently charged with a Commonwealth proceeds of crime offence.

The cash has now been forfeited to the Commonwealth following court action by the AFP-led Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce.

Why It Matters

The forfeiture removes money that investigators could not connect to a legitimate source or explanation.

The investigation considered how the cash was collected and transported. The man later pleaded guilty to a Commonwealth money laundering offence.

AFP Acting Commander Tim Underhill said law enforcement agencies would continue targeting suspected proceeds of crime through forfeiture action.

“The Proceeds of Crime Act provides law enforcement with unique powers to restrain and forfeit proceeds and instruments of crime,” Acting Commander Underhill said.

“Asset confiscation is important to remove the financial benefit gained from criminal acts, including money laundering.

“The profits derived from criminal activity are often used to fund further criminal acts, which is why the AFP works closely with its partners in the CACT to target the proceeds of crime and ensure it is re-invested to benefit the community.”

The investigation began after the cash was found at Gold Coast Airport.

The AFP acted on intelligence that a person would travel to Mildura, Victoria, carrying a large amount of cash.

The seizure highlights the airport’s role in national investigations involving suspected criminal proceeds moving between states.

Investigators identified a 35-year-old Victorian woman as being linked to the cash concealed across the family’s bags.

Following the seizure, her 36-year-old partner attended Gold Coast Airport and claimed ownership of the money.

He was charged with dealing in money or property believed to be crime proceeds worth $100,000 or more. The charge was brought under section 400.4(1A) of the Criminal Code (Cth).

The Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce investigated the seized money. It could not establish a legitimate source or explanation for the funds.

On 5 June 2026, the man pleaded guilty to a Commonwealth money laundering offence. He was sentenced on the same day.

The District Court of Queensland issued restraint and forfeiture orders on 23 July 2026. The entire $712,850 was immediately forfeited to the Commonwealth.

The Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce was established in 2012 and operates across Australia.

It brings together the AFP, Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, Australian Taxation Office and Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre. The Australian Border Force is also part of the taskforce.

Its members include police officers, financial investigators, forensic accountants, litigation lawyers and specialists from partner agencies.

Confiscated assets enter the Confiscated Assets Account. The Australian Financial Security Authority manages the account for the Commonwealth.

Money from the account supports crime prevention, intervention and diversion programs. It can also fund other law enforcement initiatives.

The Department of Home Affairs supports the responsible minister in managing expenditure programs funded through the account.

New DonateLife data has highlighted the need for more registered organ and tissue donors across Queensland.

The data covers every Queensland local government area and compares new registrations during 2025 with the previous year. It also shows the total share of eligible residents registered in each area.

The figures were released ahead of DonateLife Week, which runs from Sunday, 26 July, until Sunday, 2 August.

DonateLife is asking Queensland residents to take one minute to register through Medicare or the website. Anyone aged 16 or older can join the Australian Organ Donor Register.

The campaign also encourages registered donors to discuss their decision with family members. Knowing someone’s wishes can help relatives support donation when the time comes.

Why It Matters?

Most Australians support organ and tissue donation, but many have not formally registered their decision.

Around 2,000 Australians are currently waiting for an organ transplant. Some people die before a suitable donor becomes available.

DonateLife Queensland Nursing Director Tina Coco AO said Australians could help by registering and speaking with their families.

“There are currently around 2,000 Australians on the organ transplant waitlist who need Australia’s help. For those waiting it can be a matter of life and death,” Coco said. “This DonateLife Week, I’m urging everyone to please register as an organ and tissue donor. Then, talk to your family - let them know you want to be a donor - someone’s life depends on it.”

Coco said family conversations were important because relatives often help make the final donation decision.

“Registering as an organ and tissue donor is important because most families agree to donation when they know you want to be a donor.”

One organ donor can save up to seven lives. Eye and tissue donation can also improve the lives of many more people.

Local Impact

The Gold Coast recorded fewer new donor registrations during 2025, despite maintaining a rate above the Queensland average.

A total of 3,592 Gold Coast residents joined the register during the year. This was down from 4,316 new registrations in 2024.

The result represented a 17% decline, with 724 fewer residents registering than the previous year. By the end of 2025, an estimated 173,486 eligible Gold Coast residents were listed on the register. This represented 34% of the eligible local population.

The Gold Coast rate was four percentage points above the Queensland average. However, it remained one percentage point below the national rate.

The figures show that many Gold Coast residents support donation, but fewer recorded their decision in 2025. A higher local rate could give more families clarity during difficult circumstances.

Residents can register online or through Medicare in about one minute. They should then tell their families about their decision.

Heart recipient Sienna Howkins knows how one donor decision can change a life. She received a donor heart when she was 19.

“I’m so thankful to have a heart, and to my donor. I’m trying to do the most with what I have to give for my donor family as well,” Howkins said. “In my heart, I know they’ll be very happy to see that I’m living the biggest life I can. I’m able to live this life because of them.”

Her experience supports DonateLife’s call for Gold Coast residents to register and share their wishes with family members.

Registration records a person’s decision, while family conversations ensure those wishes are understood. Families are more likely to agree when they already know what their loved one wanted.

Other Queensland regions also recorded fewer new donor registrations during 2025:

• Redland: 1,121 new registrations, down 14%. Overall, 37% of eligible residents are registered.

• Townsville: 1,169 new registrations, down 21%. Its overall registration rate is 36%.

• Toowoomba: 1,005 new registrations, down 18%. Its overall registration rate is 35%.

• Mackay: 696 new registrations, down 18%. Its overall registration rate is also 35%.

• Rockhampton: 397 new registrations, down 26%. Overall, 32% of eligible residents are registered.

Smaller Queensland communities recorded some of the state’s highest rates. Barcoo, Bulloo, Quilpie and Winton each exceeded 40%.

The figures estimate the Australian Organ Donor Register totals to the end of 2025. Registrations were recorded by postcode and matched with population estimates.

Post office box registrations were excluded because they could not be matched to resident populations. Rates below 10 per cent were listed as less than 10 per cent.

The data came from the Organ and Tissue Authority, Services Australia and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Waitlist figures came from the 2025 Australia and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry annual report.

DonateLife Week will run from Sunday, 26 July, until Sunday, 2 August.

The campaign could encourage more Gold Coast residents to formally record their decision after registrations fell during 2025.

What’s Happened: The Gold Coast’s largest inclusive recreation showcase and fundraiser returned to Pizzey Park Skatepark in Miami today, Thursday, 23 July 2026.

It also marked six years until the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

2. Senior Sergeant Brendan Wiblen honoured at Police Academy

What’s Happening: Late Senior Sergeant Brendan Wiblen has been honoured at a special ceremony at the Queensland Police Academy in Oxley.

Family, friends and colleagues gathered at the Avenue of Remembrance on Tuesday, 21 July, where they unveiled a plaque beside a tree planted in his name. His family also received the Queensland Police Blue Heart Medal in recognition of his service and sacrifice.

Why It Matters: The ceremony recognised a respected officer whose career was marked by leadership, service and support for his colleagues.

Senior Sergeant Wiblen spent much of his Queensland policing career on the Gold Coast, where he led officers through major incidents and dangerous operations.

Local Impact: He transferred to the Gold Coast District in 1999 and served at Australia Fair, Southport and across the wider district.

As Gold Coast District Duty Officer, he became known for calm leadership, sound judgement and strong support for officers working under pressure.

• 58 years old: Senior Sergeant Wiblen was 58 when he died in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash near Glen Innes in 2024.

• 28 years with Queensland Police: He joined the Queensland Police Service in 1996 and served communities across Townsville and the Gold Coast.

• 10 years with South Australia Police: Before moving to Queensland, he spent a decade working as a detective in South Australia.

A Career Remembered: Senior Sergeant Wiblen died while taking part in the annual Wall to Wall Ride, which honours fallen police officers across Australia.

Deputy Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon APM remembered him as a respected colleague, inspiring leader, father, grandfather and friend.

3. Rare Captain Cook’s Endeavour keel heads to auction

What’s Happening: A verified piece of Captain Cook’s Endeavour will be auctioned in Sydney next week, with strong interest expected from collectors worldwide.

The keel fragment will be offered at Noble Numismatics Sale 142 from Tuesday, 28 July to Thursday, 30 July. It was donated to an English school library in the 19th century before being acquired by a Sydney Cook scholar in the 1980s.

Why It Matters: The timber provides a rare physical link to Endeavour, supported by a handwritten label and its ownership history.
