$20 million electric vehicle charger factory opens
The Gold Coast is now home to Australia’s first factory capable of producing both community lithium batteries and electric vehicle chargers.
The $20 million Yatala factory is set to produce 300 batteries and electric vehicle chargers a year and support up to 300 jobs.
eLumina, an Australian-owned company manufacturer of EV chargers, built the facility to help meet soaring global demand for batteries.
Chief executive officer Lisa Marsh said eLumina was very proud to open the Yatala factory and would be partnering with TAFE Queensland to support the training of potential employees.
Ms Marsh said eLumina was already laying plans for a further factory, which was to be three times the size of the Yatala facility.
“We’re proud to be contributing to Australia’s energy future through pushing the dial forward on battery storage to secure Australia’s energy future and support the transition to net-zero,” Ms Marsh said.
Tech Council of Australia chief executive Damian Kassabgi said Queensland, and particularly the Gold Coast was emerging as a tech hotspot and a manufacturing hub.
“Our goal is to have 1.2 million tech workers in Australia by 2030 and we’re proud to partner with Australian organisations like eLumina whose jobs are supporting the renewable energy sector,” Mr Kassabgi said.
