3330 Gold Coasters tackle Kokoda Challenge
Thousands of Gold Coast residents will take part in one of Australia's toughest team endurance events this weekend.
An impressive 3,300 people have registered to take part in the 19th annual Kokoda Challenge, with participants taking part in the 30km, 48km, or 96km courses, within the 39-hour time limit.
Teams competing in the 96km challenge will set off from Mudgeeraba at 7 am on Saturday and will hopefully finish at Nerang before the cutoff time is late on Sunday evening.
Teams will have to climb 4000m upwards and down again and battle the climate in a race to the finish line.
The event raises money for youth programs run by the Kokoda Youth Foundation.
Foundation chief executive Johllene Cooper said they were delighted with “unwavering support”, with the event sold out.
“The event has transformed the lives of hundreds of youths across Australia, fostering self-discovery, a sense of belonging, and encouraging disengaged youth to stay in the education system,” said Johllene.
"The Kokoda Challenge unites the community in the Spirit of Kokoda, and we are thrilled to return to the Gold Coast for our 19th year,"
Kokoda Youth Foundation founder Doug Henderson said the Kokoda Youth Programs were designed to provide disadvantaged and disengaged youth with tools to realise their full potential.
“With one in ten Australian youth at risk of disengagement from education and employment, programs like this are vital in continuing to safeguard the future of Australian children,” said Mr Henderson.
“Being involved in something like The Kokoda Challenge gives ordinary Australians the chance to make a life-changing difference in a young person's life.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re an avid hiker, new in your fitness journey, or someone who just enjoys the occasional walk—the event is open to all levels of experience.”
