The Gold Coast is known for its beaches, tourism, nightlife, and fun. But below the surface there is a thriving creative writing scene, with many of our home-grown authors becoming international best sellers.
Here is a list of books I read this year (which were not necessarily published this year) by talented Gold Coast-based authors.
Romance
Ledge, Chasm, Valley, and A Forbidden Alchemy by Stacey McKewan. Staring with romantasy because it’s my favourite genre. Stacey is hilarious on BookTok and her books are a wild ride, especially the last few chapters. If you like unique magic systems, badass female characters, political intrigue, and side characters with the best one-liners, then pick up one of her books.
Sinister by Melinda Terranova. I’m not usually a dark romance girly but I did enjoy the characters in this one- just make sure you take note of the trigger warnings before you start. Melinda has recently opened a cosy little indie romance bookshop in Mudgeeraba called Ivy & Ink, where I have already spent too much money.
When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker. If epic fantasy romance with complex characters and immersive world building is your thing, then the Moonfall series is for you. Sarah grew up in New Zealand but lives here now so we are totally claiming her.
The Sky Called Her Home by B.J. Wilde. Lyrical prose, intricate world-building, and beautiful romance. The author’s neuroscience background shines through in the way her characters react to situations. We love an author who doesn’t make us wait, and the next book is out just in time for Christmas.
Finance
The Seven Winning Numbers by Drew Partridge. Drew is Bonogin local, ex-military personnel turned financial planner and advisor. His book offers practical strategies for growing your wealth in Australia and has already helped me make the most of my (previously ignored) superannuation.
Self help
Life is Tough but so are You by Briony Benjamin. Meeting Briony in person, you’d never imagine she has been through the trauma of surviving cancer in her early 30s. Briony’s book is a colourful love letter to people going through challenging times, and it will encourage you to never give up.
Run Towards the Flames by Brad Hauck. Brad is a digital marketing leader and long-time volunteer with rural fire brigades. His book looks at lessons from firefighting and how they can be applied to business and leadership contexts.
True story
The Girl Who Touched the Stars by Bonnie Hancock. In her own words, Bonnie tells the story of her epic journey around the Australian continent in a surf ski, which is just a small one-person kayak that is powered by a paddle. Wild. Such an inspiring story of human triumph.
The Invisible Prison by Michelle Faye. Michelle is a domestic violence victim survivor who advocates for women in our broken legal system. This book is based on her story of trauma and abuse, to ultimately escaping and rebuilding her life with her children. Inspiring stuff.
Here hold my drink and watch this by Sunny Whitfield. A compilation of stories from his paramedic career, from the hilarious to the heart-breaking. Sunny seems like the type of person who would be fun at parties and could definitely save your life.
There you have it – my Gold Coast authors wrapped list, and several Christmas present ideas for your friends. My only other tip is to make sure you support a local bookstore if you can. Bookness Mudgeeraba and Ivy & ink Bookshop are both local gems and cosy options.
