Boating safety in focus at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show
MSQ to educate on lifejacket rules at Sanctuary Cove Boat Show before new laws take effect from 1 July 2025.
What’s happening?
Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is stepping up efforts to educate boaters about new lifejacket rules at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, which runs from Thursday 22 May to Sunday 25 May 2025.
Visitors will have the chance to learn about the lifejackets they must carry on board and the situations where wearing them becomes mandatory, ahead of stricter enforcement from 1 July 2025.
Why it matters
The updated lifejacket laws, first introduced on 1 December 2024, require boaters to wear lifejackets during high-risk situations. These measures aim to reduce preventable deaths and injuries on the water.
“Currently MSQ is rolling out education around the new rules to boaties before it moves to enforcement,” the agency said in its announcement.
Additionally, by 1 September 2025, all lifejackets must meet the Australian Standard AS4758. MSQ's presence at the event serves as a critical touchpoint to raise awareness and boost compliance, especially as many show attendees are either purchasing their first vessel or upgrading.
Local Impact
MSQ will host a vibrant booth at the show, offering vital information on safe boating practices, ship-sourced pollution regulations, and local waterway compliance. The display is designed to attract both adults and children. MSQ staff will be available throughout the event to field questions and guide boaters through the changes.
MSQ General Manager Kell Dillon will attend the show on opening day, Thursday 22 May, and will be available for media interviews on boating safety and lifejacket compliance.
By the Numbers:

1 July 2025 – MSQ will begin enforcement of lifejacket wearing in high-risk situations.
1 September 2025 – All lifejackets must meet Australian Standard AS4758.
4 Days – Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show runs from 22–25 May and is the largest boat show in the southern hemisphere.
Zoom In
MSQ’s initiative is timed with the influx of potential new boat owners attending the prestigious boat show. With many attendees unfamiliar with the latest maritime regulations, the event provides MSQ with an ideal platform to educate and inform.
Zoom Out
The Queensland Government has committed to improving recreational boating safety across the state. These lifejacket reforms reflect broader strategies to reduce accidents and improve emergency response on waterways.
What to look for next?
Expect increased public education through social media, maritime events, and direct outreach before MSQ begins enforcement on 1 July 2025. Boaters should prepare by checking their lifejacket compliance and staying updated via MSQ’s Facebook page.
