1. One Big Thing: CEOs Sleeping Together for a Cause
By Marshall Hall
What's Happening
Over 200 Gold Coast business owners and senior executives will spend a freezing tonight at CBUS Super Stadium to raise funds for charity.
Why It Matters
The 223 business leaders are participating in a sleepout event to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society, focusing on aiding people experiencing homelessness and Gold Coasters needing accommodation, meals, and emergency assistance.
By the Numbers
$500,000, the targeted amount in this year’s sleepout
$470,000 has been raised so far
More than 200 participants will be taking part in this year’s event
Zooming In
The event, led by Colin Wheeler from Document Solutions, has become a highlight on the city's business elite's annual calendar.
Three executives from Village Roadshow Theme Parks have collectively raised over $60,000 so far, and three from Clarendon Homes have raised $23,000.
The KPMG Gold Coast team, led by partner Adam Twemlow, has entered again this year. The whole team has had some good support and fundraising from its network.
What The People Say
Stephen Hobbs said, “Everyone is looking forward to a challenging evening in support of this very worthwhile cause. Some good networking, some good stories and some good bonding across the Gold Coast business community.”
Going To A Great Cause
The funds raised will ensure the continuation and expansion of essential services, providing accommodation, meals, and emergency assistance to Gold Coasters in need.
2. Relieving Urban Pressures at Saltwater Creek - Help Needed June 22
What's Happening
OzFish Unlimited, in collaboration with the Council of the City of Gold Coast, is launching a restoration initiative to enhance the fish habitat and overall health of Saltwater Creek with calls to help on June 22.
Why It Matters
The project, funded by the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments program, will help combat the urban development that has put immense pressure on Saltwater Creek, which is vital for the local ecosystem.
The restoration efforts will benefit migratory fish and bird species, improve water quality, and support local fishing prospects.
By the Numbers
Two tonnes of litter are set to be removed.
One major barrier to fish movement in Saltwater Creek is targeted in this initiative.
There are hundreds of barriers to fish passage in the catchment area, with three in Saltwater Creek being in the top 50 for remediation in the Gold Coast region.
Local Impact
The project aims to restore connectivity and improve the health of the waterway, benefiting the entire ecosystem, including Moreton Bay Ramsar Wetland and Moreton Bay Marine Park.
Saltwater Creek, a popular fishing spot for Gold Coast locals, will hopefully see enhanced habitats for species like freshwater mullet, dusky flathead, and yellowfin bream.
Community Call For Locals To Help
Volunteers are needed for the first community clean-up event on Saturday, 22 June, at Hope Island.
