Car thefts are up 11% in the northern Gold Coast suburbs, according to the latest Queensland Police statistics.
Most of the offenders (52%) are coming to the Gold Coast from outside the city, committing an offence and leaving.
Deputy Mayor Donna Gates says the Council is aware residents need to feel safe in the community and their homes and is urging the state government to take action. “We need greater police resources in northern Gold Coast and stronger action by the judiciary,’’ said Ms Gates.
The council already has 872 CCTV cameras spread throughout the city, and the council will consider increasing that number in the 2024 budget.
Meanwhile, the Gold Coast is also suffering from a domestic violence epidemic. In 2018, there were 887 domestic violence incidents reported for the year, and this year to date, there have already been 1824 reports.
