Facing cancer with confidence on the Gold Coast
The next Gold Coast based face-to-face session is at Women’s Cancer Support Haven in Nerang on Friday 18 October 10am.
In 1989, a health professional worked with a cancer patient who was so depressed and self-conscious that she wouldn’t leave her hospital room. The health caregiver organised a makeover for her, and the physical and emotional change in the patient was so profound that it became clear that this was a much-needed service to help manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.
It was from here that Look Good Feel Better was born.
The program launched in Australia in 1990 and now exists in 26 countries, having helped over 2 million cancer patients worldwide. It reached the Gold Coast almost 30 years ago in 1995.
According to the Cancer Council, 4,391 people on the Gold Coast are newly diagnosed with cancer each year, the most common being prostate and breast cancer.
Thanks to the Cancer Patients Foundation, Gold Coast cancer fighters can attend face-to-face or virtual Look Good Feel Better sessions to assist with topics like wigs & headwear, exercise during treatment, yoga, meditation, hair loss & regrowth, cosmetic tattooing, makeup & skincare, and head wraps for warmer weather. Some sessions are catered to women and others are unisex.
If you or a loved one would like to sign up for a workshop, head to the registration portal here and type in your city or suburb. The next Gold Coast based face-to-face session is at Women’s Cancer Support Haven in Nerang on Friday 18 October 10am.
Testimonials from people who have used these free services are incredibly positive. For example, a 30-year-old mother, Victoria, said that her family was happy to see her smiling again and enjoying playing with colourful scarves and cosmetics.
Look Good Feel Better doesn’t have any government funding and relies on the support of charitable foundations, donors, volunteers, and beauty industry partners. If you would like to donate (it’s tax deductable!) or volunteer, head to the website and know that your generosity is so very appreciated by the people who need these invaluable workshops.
