Free aviation safety seminar set for Murwillumbah
Murwillumbah pilots are invited to a free CASA seminar on 7 May 2026 focused on safer flying decisions.

What’s happening?
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority will host a free aviation safety seminar in Murwillumbah on Thursday, 7 May 2026.
The session, titled “Time to decide”, will be held at Murwillumbah Aero Club on Airfield Avenue.
CASA is focusing on pilot decision-making, which remains a major safety issue in aviation.
The seminar will help pilots make the right call at the right time before and during flights.
Aviation safety advisor Tim Penney said pilots make decisions in every part of a flight.
“When flying, a pilot makes decisions in every action before and during a flight, including pre-flight planning and go/no-go decisions,” Tim says.
Why it matters?
Poor decision-making continues to be a leading cause of aircraft accidents worldwide.
CASA’s seminar is designed to help pilots understand how decisions are made under pressure.
It will also cover the factors that can affect a pilot’s thinking and actions in the cockpit.
“Different types of decision-making have different impacts in the cockpit, plus there are a range of factors that affect a pilot’s thinking and actions,” Tim says.
Local Impact
The Murwillumbah seminar gives local pilots a free chance to refresh their safety knowledge close to home.
It is open to everyone, from novice flyers to experienced pilots.
Refreshments will also be provided, making the evening accessible for local aviation community members.
For Murwillumbah and nearby flying communities, the session offers practical safety advice before pilots return to the air.
By the numbers
The Murwillumbah session runs for two hours, giving pilots a focused window for safety discussion and practical advice.
The seminar starts at 7:00 PM AEST and finishes at 9:00 PM AEST at Murwillumbah Aero Club.
CASA’s aviation safety advisors host free seminars across Australia each year to support safer flying.
Zoom In
The seminar will look at decision-making before take-off and while in the air.
This includes pre-flight planning, go/no-go decisions and in-flight judgement.
CASA says pilots make safety decisions through every action they take before and during a flight.
Tim Penney said the session will leave pilots with useful takeaways.
“At the end of an informative session, you’ll get practical tips to improve your decision-making skills and be safer every time you fly.”
Zoom Out
The Murwillumbah event is part of CASA’s wider national seminar program.
The program helps pilots refresh their skills, improve their knowledge and strengthen flight safety.
By focusing on human decision-making, CASA is putting attention on one of aviation’s most important safety factors.
