The power went out on Thursday and didn’t come back on for 11 days. Every route out of our house was flooded. Trees dangled over powerlines. We had no phone reception. The hum of generators sang with the chorus of drumming raindrops and howling wind. The air was sticky with early autumn humidity that made mould grow on our clothes and shoes.
This was the Mudgeeraba experience during ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
For many of us in the hinterland, losing power also means losing sewerage and water pressure. We are often the first to lose power and the last to get it restored. We choose to live surrounded by nature, in the most beautiful part of the Gold Coast, but it can come with a higher cost in times of severe weather.
This is why every hinterlander is encouraged to come along to the Hinterland and Community Connector, a free disaster resilience event specifically designed for vulnerable hinterland communities.
