Gamifying disaster resilience: new augmented reality missions for kids
The City of Gold Coast is taking disaster readiness and resilience to a new dimension, with new interactive augmented reality (AR) missions now available in the Agents of Discovery app.
Designed specifically for primary school students aged between 5 to 12 years, these digital missions transform the serious business of severe weather emergencies into an engaging, move-to-play adventure.
Through the power of AR, young agents can complete challenges that teach life-saving skills in a fun, hands-on way. Key ‘Play from Anywhere’ missions include:
Disaster Emergency Kits: Kids use a smartphone or tablet to identify and “pack” essential items into an emergency kit.
Know Your Hazards: Players learn to identify local Gold Coast risks, such as floods, cyclones, and bushfires, understanding how these events shape our environment.
Hazards Around the Home: A dedicated mission teaches families about simple home maintenance, such as clearing leaves from gutters to prevent fire and water risks.
Beyond physical safety, the app uniquely addresses the emotional impact of emergencies. The ‘Storm of Feelings’ mission provides kids with practical coping strategies to navigate the anxiety and stress that can arise during severe weather events.
The app is completely free to use and can be downloaded from your phone or tablet’s app store. To download the app and become a disaster resilience hero, click here.
