1. One Big Thing: Hardcore Sneaker Culture Hits HOTA
What’s Happening?
The Gold Coast's Home of the Arts (HOTA) is now home to the international sensation Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street.
This exhibition, originating at London's Design Museum, celebrates sneakers' captivating world, having toured through Amsterdam and Seoul.
Why It Matters
The exhibition showcases how sneakers influence youth culture, customisation, and scarcity, transcending their role as mere sports gear, and we get to experience it here.
Zoom In
Sneakers Unboxed showcases 200+ shoes and 400+ sneaker-related objects, including century-old Chuck Taylors, rare green and gold Nike Prestos from the Sydney 2000 Olympics, and Fitzroy's unconventional Kikos.
The Big Picture
Sneakers aren't just footwear; they're a cultural phenomenon spanning design, fashion, music, and more. The exhibition highlights youth culture, customisation, and scarcity's pivotal role in elevating sneakers from sports gear to cultural icons.
What the People Say
"The importance of sneakers now exists because young people made it their own thing," says Ligaya Salazar, the curator.
Sneakers are symbols of self-expression and youth-driven trends.
What To Look For Next
The sneaker industry, worth $75 billion annually and projected to reach $100 billion by 2028, is expanding.
Brands are leveraging collaborations and marketing, but sneaker quality may be compromised.
Expect the sneaker industry's continuous growth.
Keep an eye on evolving sneaker culture, especially in the online realm.
As sneaker culture takes hold on the Gold Coast, it's clear that sneakers transcend footwear; they're a cultural force with a fascinating history and a bright future.
2. Coomera Connector - Calls For Locals To Have A Say
What’s Happening?
With early works planned to commence around the Nerang River next year and major construction expected to begin in late 2024, the State Government is inviting feedback from Gold Coast residents regarding the design of the southern section of the Coomera Connector.
Why It Matters
The Stage One South project aims to improve transportation in South East Queensland by creating a Second M1, reducing traffic congestion and facilitating shorter trips for locals.
Zoom In
The Australian and Queensland governments have committed $22 million on a 50:50 basis to continue planning for future stages of the Coomera Connector from Loganholme to Coomera.
The project, once dubbed the "Second M1," aims to alleviate congestion, enhancing the region's connectivity.
The Big Picture
Beyond easing traffic woes, this ambitious project is a job creator and a step forward in linking the southeast, simplifying transit across neighbourhoods.
What the People Say
"It's about making travel easier and more convenient," says Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon.
Community feedback is welcomed until December 17, with various channels open for input.
What To Look For Next
Early 2024: Stage 1 Central main road construction to start.
Late 2024: Stage 1 South main road construction to start.
Late 2025: Stage 1 is expected to progressively open to traffic in sections.
