Gilmour Space launches satellite into orbit
Gold Coast space company Gilmour Space Technologies has confirmed that it has teamed up with Elon Musk’s Space X to successfully launch a 100kg satellite into orbit.
The company’s first ElaraSat MMS-1 satellite-1 was launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-14 mission in June and the satellite has been orbiting ever since.
The Gold Coast designed and built satellite is carrying a hyperspectral imager from CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency.
“This is a proud moment for our team and partners,” said Mark Grimminck, Head of Satellites at Gilmour Space.
“ElaraSat MMS-1 is designed for multiple missions — and this first flight shows how Australia can build expertise in sovereign satellite technology while paving the way for future missions.”
The satellite was designed to host payloads of up to 30 kg and is compatible with a variety of launch vehicles, including Gilmour Space Technology’s own Eris orbital rocket.
In July, the company successfully launched its Eris rocket on a test flight before it was cancelled 14 seconds into the flight because of a malfunction.
Gilmour Space hopes to deliver integrated satellite missions to global customers from Australia for commercial, civil, and defence needs.
