Local community groups in Mudgeeraba and Bonogin are set to host a weekend of natural disaster preparedness, recovery, and resilience events on Saturday 11 October and Sunday 12 October 2025.
The resilience drive kicks off at Mudgeeraba Uniting Church (89 Franklin Drive) on Saturday 11 October 1pm-4pm, where there will be a range of stalls and short talks about generators, solar, battery storage, septic systems, communications, relief hubs, and more. The Mudgeeraba Lions will host a free sausage sizzle, there will be face painting for kids, and practical disaster-ready giveaways at the door.
On Sunday 12 October the annual Bonogin Valley Rural Fire Brigade Open Day is happening from 10am to 2pm at their headquarters (660 Bonogin Road). This cherished hinterland tradition is a fantastic family day out, featuring local stall holders, live music, face painting, a petting zoo, and the vital opportunity to meet and chat with the dedicated rural fire brigade members and volunteers.
Councillor for Division 9, Glenn Tozer, said he was looking forward to spending a weekend with the community building resilience for bushfire, storm, and flood seasons.
“The hinterland community was hit particularly hard by both the Christmas 2023 storm and the recent cyclone. Some households went without power for up to 14 days, which also meant no water and no sewerage services in some cases.”
“It’s great to see our fantastic community groups and rural fire brigades taking the lead in making sure we are all educated and prepared for this year’s season of unpredictable weather. Plus, I do love a good sausage sizzle,” he said.
Both events are free to attend, and the community is encouraged to use this opportunity to help their families, friends, and neighbours.
