Gold Coast landmark renamed
A major Gold Coast landmark has a new name.
The riverside sporting stadium at Carrara that is home to the Gold Coast Suns has now been named People First Stadium.
Previously called Heritage Bank Stadium, the bank’s merger with People’s Choice Credit Union last year forced the change of name.
People First Stadium was originally the home ground of the Nerang Bulls Rugby Union before being developed as an Australian rules football stadium in 1986 for the then-named Brisbane Bears (now the Brisbane Lions).
The first event to be held at the venue under its new name was the sold-out AFL opening-round victory for the Suns against Richmond.
People First Bank CEO Peter Lock says People First Bank branding will adorn the stadium for the next four years.
“As a bank, we have our roots in Queensland, going back almost 150 years, so it’s quite fitting that this is where we’re launching our new chapter,’’ said Mr Lock.
In terms of sporting events, the stadium hosts AFL, AFLW and Brisbane Heat Big Bash League matches. During the past 12 months, the stadium has also hosted international music acts, including Harry Styles, Paul McCartney, Post Malone and P!NK.
Gold Coast Suns chief executive Mark Evans says the club is delighted to have People First Bank associated with its home venue.
“People First Stadium is just that – for the people. It’s a valued asset for our region that will continue to engage a wide range of communities and bring diverse content to the Gold Coast,’’ he said.
