As the 2024 Gold Coast Memory Walk & Jog approaches, over 560 participants are preparing to lace up their running shoes. This year's event promises to be a significant occasion, uniting the community to raise awareness and funds for dementia—a condition affecting millions of Australians.
Taking place at Pratten Park, Broadbeach, on Sunday, 2 June, this event is a part of a nationwide initiative with 22 similar events held across Australia throughout the year.
Supporting Families Impacted by Dementia
Dr Kaele Stokes, Dementia Australia's Executive Director of Services, Advocacy & Research, highlights the importance of such community events. "It's estimated that 65 per cent of people living with dementia reside within our communities.
This could be a family member, a friend, or a neighbour," Dr Stokes explains. The Memory Walk & Jog offers a platform for individuals to support their loved ones and the broader community affected by dementia.
Join the Movement
Participants of all fitness levels are encouraged to join the event, either as individuals or as part of a team. Whether you're walking, jogging, or running, every step contributes to a larger cause.
The event is not just about physical activity but also about coming together to share stories and experiences, fostering a sense of solidarity among participants.
Get Involved Your Way
For those unable to attend the Gold Coast event, Dementia Australia offers the flexibility of organising a MyWay event.
This allows participants to choose their own date and location, making it convenient for everyone to get involved and show their support.
