Gold Coasters appointed to Screen Queensland Board
Three Gold Coasters have been appointed to new roles on the board of Screen Queensland.
The appointees are Bond University executive Patricia Alner, former RACV Royal Pines general manager John Morris and environmental and planning lawyer Venesa Gleeson are set to join the Queensland’s Government-owned film industry agency .
Screen Queensland invests in locally made films, series and digital games, and supports international productions.
The State Government is contributing more than $40 million to the screen sector in a bid to help make Queensland a major global hub for the film industry.
The incoming chair of the board, Ms Alner, has previously served as Chair of Screen Queensland’s Audit and Risk Committee and is the current Director of Strategy and Planning for Bond University.
Mr Morris has had a long history in the tourism and hospitality industries, including as General Manager of RACV Resorts Queensland, a director with Destination Queensland and a director of Airports Vanuatu.
Ms Gleeson, who is married to former Gold Coast Bulletin editor Peter Gleeson, has a background in corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management. She previously served as Senior Legal Counsel for major property developer Walker Corporation for more than 20 years.
The fourth appointee, John Kotzas AM, served as Chief Executive of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre for 16 years before retiring from the role in 2024.
He was the Brisbane Festival’s first Managing Director and has been acknowledged for his 40-year contribution to Australia’s arts and cultural sector with numerous honours and awards, including an Order of Australia.
Ms Alner, Ms Gleeson, Mr Kotzas and Mr Morris join continuing Screen Queensland Board members Lynne Benzie, who heads up the Oxenford-based Village Roadshow Studios, Griffith University Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Scott Harrison, culture industry strategist Cathy Hunt AM, and community engagement consultant Carla McGrath.
Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek said the board appointments would bring renewed energy, vision and broad expertise spanning the arts, cultural, tourism and corporate sectors.
“Queensland’s reputation as a screen hub continues to grow and I have full confidence our new board has the vision and expertise to put us on the map as a global production powerhouse,” Mr Langbroek said.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Ms Alner to the role of Chair, and Ms Gleeson, Mr Kotzas and Mr Morris as new directors, who will collectively bring their real-world experience to the Screen Queensland Board.
“With their diverse backgrounds and strong leadership credentials, I’m confident Screen Queensland will continue to drive our State’s screen and games industries forward, creating jobs for Queenslanders and sharing our stories with the world.”
