Joyriders escape police net
Joyriders in three stolen cars were involved in a dangerous driving rampage across the Gold Coast earlier this week.
Just before 10 am Tuesday, police sighted a stolen 2013 black Volkswagen Tiguan at Worongary being driven by a man, travelling in convoy with a stolen 2016 white Subaru Levorg and a stolen 2014 white Nissan X-Trail.
The Volkswagen had been stolen from Kalang Street at Palm Beach sometime after midnight on January 12, while the Subaru had been stolen from Thorngate Drive at Robina sometime between 9.30 pm on January 9 and 4.30 am on January 10.
The Nissan had been stolen from Chambers Flat Road at Waterford West around 6 am on 12 January.
The police helicopter PolAir tracked the stolen Volkswagen travelling at high speed in both directions on the Pacific Motorway before it was dumped in an underground carpark at Helensvale Plaza at Sir John Overall Drive.
The driver then jumped into the stolen 2014 Nissan X-Trail and fled with a female driver.
Police descended on the carpark where they found the stolen Tiguan and the stolen Suburu.
Polair then tracked the stolen Nissan from Discovery Drive at Helensvale to Logan before it turned south on the Pacific Motorway and fled into New South Wales.
Later, around 8.45 pm, Polair tracked the vehicle driving dangerously along the Pacific Motorway, requiring a portion of the Highway to be temporarily shut down by police as a safety precaution.
At 10.10pm, the vehicle was last seen travelling through Merrimac when PolAir was forced to terminate tracking because of dangerous weather conditions.
Police are still looking for the stolen Nissan and the drivers.
