1. Mudgeeraba Creek causeway works progress
What’s Happening: A stronger crossing over Mudgeeraba Creek is taking shape on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road, with all culvert installation now complete for the replacement causeway.
Why It Matters: The upgrade is designed to improve flood immunity on a key hinterland road that connects communities, including Austinville, Neranwood and Springbrook.
Once complete, the raised crossing is expected to reduce how often the road closes during severe weather and how long those closures last.
By The Numbers
74 reinforced concrete culverts have been installed, forming the main structure of the new crossing.
Each culvert is about 3.6 metres high, with a 100-tonne crane used to unload and place them.
The new causeway will sit 2.5 metres higher than the existing crossing, helping improve access during wet weather.
Local Impact: For Gold Coast hinterland residents, the upgrade is about keeping people connected when heavy rain hits.
Fewer extended closures would mean shorter detours, safer access and a more reliable link for communities that depend on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road.
The Creek Test Comes Next: Traffic will be diverted onto the new alignment in the coming months so downstream construction can continue.
Environmental safeguards will be used during that stage to help protect the sensitive Mudgeeraba Creek ecosystem while the remaining works are carried out.
What The People Say: Department of Transport and Main Roads Acting Regional Director for South Coast, Belinda Stewart, said local communities know how quickly the creek can rise.
“Communities across the Gold Coast hinterland understand how quickly this creek can rise,” Stewart said.
“This investment will deliver infrastructure built to endure increasingly severe weather events, which will mean residents of Austinville, Neranwood and Springbrook will be less likely to face extended detours during weather events.”
“These culverts form the structural backbone of a stronger, safer crossing that will maintain connectivity when it matters most.”

2. Young bodyboarders chase world qualifier at Duranbah
What’s Happening: Some of Australia’s best young bodyboarders will hit Duranbah Beach on July 11 and 12 for the City of Gold Coast Future Pro’s, the Australian leg of the IBC Junior World Tour Rising Series.
The free spectator event will bring junior riders from across Australia, along with international entrants including competitors from Hawaii, as they chase world ranking points and a possible spot at the Junior Men Grand Final in Spain this October.
Why It Matters: The event creates a more realistic pathway into international competition without the cost of travelling overseas first.
Hosting the event at Duranbah was a major milestone for the local bodyboarding community and further recognised the Gold Coast as one of Australia’s leading bodyboarding destinations.
By The Numbers
Around 50 young riders are expected to compete across junior divisions.
Riders can earn up to 500 points toward the IBC Junior World Rankings.
The event forms part of the pathway to 48 places in the IBC Junior Men Grand Final in Spain this October.

Big Waves, Small Boards, Serious Stakes: The Future Pro’s is designed to give junior athletes a professional-level competition experience, with a priority judging system, seven Level 3 accredited judges, live beach commentary, a livestream broadcast, post-heat interviews and prize presentations.
What To Look For Next: The two-day event will give junior riders a chance to secure strong results, ranking points and momentum ahead of the Spain final in October.

3. Teenager arrested after knives seized at Helensvale
What’s Happening: Gold Coast police have arrested a 14-year-old Pimpama boy after allegedly finding two knives during a proactive wanding operation at Helensvale train station.
Why It Matters: The arrest comes during a high-visibility policing push across the Gold Coast, with officers focusing on crime hotspots and public transport hubs during the school holidays.
By The Numbers
Since 27 June, officers involved in Operation Luminous have conducted 372 wandings across the Gold Coast.
Officers have also completed 224 street checks, 72 shopping centre walkthroughs and more than 400 community engagements.
The operation has resulted in two knives being seized, with nine offenders charged with a total of 12 offences.
Local Impact: Helensvale train station is one of the key locations included in the operation, alongside shopping centres and central business districts. These areas attract strong foot traffic during the break, especially from families, commuters and teenagers.
Zoom In: The Helensvale arrest centred on a 14-year-old boy from Pimpama, who police allege was carrying two knives when officers approached the group at the station.
One knife was allegedly concealed in his waistband, while the other was allegedly attached to his left hip. The matter was handled under the Youth Justice Act, which applies to young people involved in alleged offending.
What The People Say: Superintendent Brett Jackson said Operation Luminous was focused on ensuring people could safely enjoy public spaces during the school holidays.
“Operation Luminous provides a highly visible police presence in areas where families, commuters and young people gather during the school holidays,” Superintendent Jackson said.
“Every knife removed from a public place is one less weapon that has the potential to cause serious harm.
“Our officers will continue conducting proactive wanding operations, engaging with the community and taking enforcement action where necessary to help keep the Gold Coast safe.”
What To Look For Next: Operation Luminous will continue throughout the school holiday period.
