Landcare Week on the Gold Coast
Landcare Week is an annual celebration of landcare held during 5-11 August to acknowledge the people who are actively restoring, enhancing, and protecting the natural environment in their community.
Landcare volunteers and groups work all year to care for the environment in their community, and Landcare Week is an opportunity for groups to promote their projects and thank their volunteers. Any community-led group working on environmental projects are part of landcare.
With more than 6,000 groups and over 140,000+ volunteers, landcare encompasses not only landcare and other community groups, also farmers, landholders, Traditional Owners and First Nations organisations, landcare facilitators and coordinators, youth groups, researchers, academics, and government agencies.
Here in our beautiful Hinterland, there are several groups caring for the land so that it can be enjoyed by generations to come. They are always on the lookout for volunteers, so if looking after the natural environment is something you are passionate about, get in touch with one of the following groups:
Austinville Landcare: restoring the native habitat of a 17km stretch of upper Mudgeeraba Creek
Bonogin Valley Bushcare Group: restoring the remaining vegetation along a stretch of Mudgeeraba Creek at Firth Park
Hinterland Regional Park Bushcare Group: weed control and restoration of native bushland
Seed the Ground: diverting food waste from landfill through community-run compost hubs, now at Raba Urban Farm turning food waste into community gardens
Springbrook Wildlife Appreciation Group: looking after wildlife and native vegetation in world heritage listed Springbrook
Thank you to every volunteer who works to restore and protect our beautiful biodiversity hotspots.
