1. One Big Thing: Gold Coast residents search for an independent voice in Moncrieff
What’s Happening
Fed up with the two-party system, a group of Gold Coast residents has begun the search for an independent candidate to represent Moncrieff in the next federal election.
Why It Matters
After speaking to hundreds of locals in the area, the group found that many in Moncrieff feel their concerns about local issues like housing, transport, and the cost of living are being ignored by the major parties.
Now almost a year into their pursuit and inspired by the recent achievements of independents in the Federal Parliament, Voices of Moncrieff is a grassroots effort aiming to provide an alternative option for locals and offer the electorate a genuine voice in Canberra.
Where even is Moncrieff?
It’s here 👇
By the Numbers
Just 7% of locals who were polled were satisfied with their current political representation
More than 400 Moncrieff residents participated in a community listening project
What They Said
Debbie Miller, a volunteer, said, “We believe Moncrieff needs a passionate, local and independent voice to represent our community. People are telling us they want someone who is honest, community-minded and has the integrity to fight on our behalf in Canberra. There’s been too much inaction on issues affecting our community, such as transport, housing, cost of living, and our environment. Our message to the people of Moncrieff is to help us change the game at the next federal election”.
Local Impact
The movement reflects a deep desire for change, with locals calling for an independent candidate who is honest, community-minded, and focused on local needs, with key issues such as transport, housing, and the environment being high on the agenda.
What To Look For Next
The search for a suitable independent candidate is heating up, and Moncrieff could see a shift in its political landscape at the next election, challenging the traditional party dominance.

2. GC pub takeover fight rolls on
By Marshall Hall
What’s Happening
The battle for control of a company that owns three Gold Coast pubs shows no sign of easing following a meeting of shareholders yesterday.
Why It Matters
Despite ongoing offers, Hotel Property Investment’s (HPI) shareholders overwhelmingly support the board as it battles against a takeover offer from Charter Hall Retail REIT and Hostplus, voting over 90% in favour of the current leadership at the AGM.
By the Numbers
HPI has 58 pubs across Australia, with three on the Gold Coast
November 26: Deadline for takeover decision
90% of shareholders voted to back the board
What To Look For Next

3. Introducing Gold Coast Arena
What’s Happening
A new world-class venue is being proposed for Southport, poised to elevate the Gold Coast as an entertainment hotspot, with the community being asked to have a say on the proposal by December 9.
Why It Matters
The Gold Coast Arena would be a 12,000-spectator venue for concerts, sports, and family entertainment located near Broadwater; it will be surrounded by dining, retail, and accommodation options, enhancing its appeal.
By the Numbers
$1.5 billion economic output is suggested the venue would produce over 10 years
80 major events annually would be able to be accommodated
740 full-time jobs are to be able to be created
Local Impact
The city continues to develop itself as a go-to sport and entertainment, and a project like this is suggested to fill a gap by delivering a modern entertainment facility near the tram line and major tourist hotspots just a few tram stops away.
This project strengthens the Gold Coast’s bid for major events, especially with Brisbane 2032 on the horizon.
What to Look for Next
Probably some plans to extend the tram line down the GC Highway past the venue toward Labrador and Harbour Town (kinda makes sense), and, the link below to have a say on the proposal.
The Community Feedback survey closes on November 9.
