O-Type blood donors urgently needed on the Gold Coast
Lifeblood needs 200 O-type donors on the Gold Coast this week as blood levels drop to lowest since 2023.
What’s happening?
Australian Red Cross Lifeblood issued an urgent call for O-type blood donors, as levels of both O positive and O negative have fallen to their lowest point since October 2023.
Why it matters
Lifeblood spokesperson Belinda Smetioukh warned, “We’re seeing the highest rates of people rescheduling or cancelling their appointments since June last year, and our O-type blood supplies are at their lowest level since October 2023.” This shortage puts pressure on hospitals, which issue almost 10,000 blood transfusions and medications daily. Without urgent donations, patients across the country may be at risk.
O negative is especially critical because it is considered the universal blood type. “It’s often stocked in ambulances and rescue helicopters for trauma cases, when a patient’s blood type is unknown and rapid transfusions are required,” said Belinda. Despite fewer than seven per cent of Australians being O negative, it makes up 16% of blood ordered by hospitals.
Local Impact
Gold Coast residents are being asked to urgently step up, with 200 O-type blood donors needed this week alone. “O positive is equally vital,” Belinda added. “Forty per cent of Australians have O positive, and it is safe for most emergency transfusions.”
She encouraged new donors, saying, “If you’ve never donated before and don’t know your blood type, coming in is a great way to find out — and save a life.”

Appointments take about an hour, with the actual donation lasting just ten minutes. Belinda shared, “An hour of your time might give someone the rest of their life.”
Zoom Out
As winter begins, donation rates tend to drop. Lifeblood is urging healthy individuals across all blood types to book now. “We can’t do it without people donating,” said Belinda.
What To Look For Next?
More mobile blood units are expected to roll out across South-East Queensland. Locals are encouraged to call 13 14 95, visit lifeblood.com.au, or download the DonateBlood app to make an appointment.
