1 Big Thing: Gold Coast Goes For 2026 Commonwealth Games Glory
Happening now
Following Victoria’s fumbling of the Commonwealth Games 2026 baton just a few days ago to the detriment of the nation’s global standing as a reliable major event host, it appears the Gold Coast didn't just sit back.
In recent hours, the GC’s Mayor, Tom Tate and the team have sprinted to the starting line with an open bid to step in and save the Commonwealth Games from Victoria’s inability to execute and properly manage a budget.
Athletic Alchemy
Despite some debating the previous event’s success, given that in the 2018 Games, the coastal City proudly made waves through our team by bagging a staggering 198 medals – 80 of them gleaming gold, showing that our athletes flourish on home turf.
Potentially the perfect training ground for 2032.
What the people say
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate sees this potential re-run as “not just an encore of their triumphant 2018 performance but a rehearsal for the grand spectacle – the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.”
The move resembles a perfect relay pass, smoothly transitioning Queensland into its full-blown Olympic preparation phase.
Australian Team Spirt
Athletics Australia is all in for this proposal, lauding the Gold Coast for its exceptional 2018 hosting prowess that "left a profound impact on Australian sport."
They envision this potential 2026 performance as a crucial stepping stone for athletes eyeing Olympic and Paralympic glory in 2032.
Victorian Blunders, Queensland Wonders
As the beleaguered Commonwealth Games Federation scrambles to find a willing and capable host, the Gold Coast stands ready, unfazed by the challenge.
Despite Victoria's supposed financial concerns and inabilities, Tom Tate’s Gold Coast team have been quick to remind everyone that they have stuck to the budget before and can absolutely do it again.
And that the Commonwealth Games' spirit lives on, and on the Gold Coast, it will flourish.
What to look for next
Hot debate on all City, State and Federal levels and a bunch of hotly contested local chatter about the City’s ability to take the event on, given the short notice.
Stay tuned!
2. GC Airport’s Rideshare Rumble
Road Blocked
Gold Coast Airport's game-changing decision to shift its taxi rank, favouring Uber and other rideshare providers, has revved up a storm of protests from local cab drivers.
Where it’s going
The proposed relocation from domestic arrivals to the new international terminal has left the cabbies from 13Cabs and Black & White on edge, supposedly fearing for passenger safety and their bottom line from the reshuffle.
What the people say
As this shift gears up, rumblings of hidden fuel to the fire.
Local online chat amongst impacted drivers has been hotly debating the move and saying, "We will have to go through the boom gate", “hinting at potential extra charges.
“This echoes Cairns' $2.50 per pick-up/drop-off fee for rideshares.”
Zoom in
The taxi drivers’ angst rides high on concerns also a range of issues, such as Uber’s security protocols, surge pricing, and alleged cash demands from passengers.
Other concerns raised by drivers point out how this change may disadvantage taxi drivers, who've occupied that prime position for over 50 years.
The end of the road
Airport authorities maintain the move was planned in consultation with taxi firms, touting expanded facilities and safety enhancements.
But with massive financial losses predicted for cabbies and the burden potentially falling on passengers, their road ahead seems as unpredictable as Gold Coast's cyclone weather window.
Is this the way of the future, or is it just another traffic jam in the making? We’ll soon see.
