Australian sporting icon Raelene Boyle is heading down to show her support for the inaugural Ride for Hayley event at Robina Town Centre today at 11am, with the final day of the fundraiser being this Sunday, May 19.
“It’s an important cause to support, so I hope you’ll all join me in getting down to Robina Town Centre for the final weekend of Ride for Hayley,” said Raelene, who is a survivor of breast and ovarian cancer and founding board member for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). “I’d encourage my fellow Queenslanders to do their 10kms, donate $10, then challenge 10 friends to do the same.”
It’s the last opportunity for locals to participate in the event – spearheaded by Bakers Delight Queensland – for 2024, with the final day to fundraise for breast cancer on site being this Sunday May 19. Those who can’t make it down are encouraged to sign up for a “virtual” ride.
Raelene - who will be joined on Thursday by doctor, breast cancer survivor/advocate and BCNA Board member Mellissa Naidoo - joins the list of local sports heroes jumping on their bikes to support the cause. Last week, Tom Berry, Sam Clohesy, and Darcy Macpherson from the Gold Coast Suns shared their support for the breast cancer fundraiser honouring Hayley Fyfield.
Berry is an ambassador for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) – who is the recipient of the funds raised – having lost his mum Jedda to the disease in 2013.
Hayley Fyfield passed from breast cancer in March 2024. She and husband Paul were the long-term franchisees at Bakers Delight Hampton, in Victoria. Ride for Hayley is a way for the Queensland team to honour their beloved colleague’s memory while raising money for BCNA during its annual Pink Bun fundraising campaign.
Inspired by AFL superstar Shane Crawford’s ride to Perth – to fundraise for BCNA – Ride for Hayley sees a virtual bike ride from Robina in Queensland to Hampton in Victoria and back. The total target will be 3426kms. People can participate and raise money for BCNA by doing a 10km ride and donating $10, then challenging 10 friends to do the same. People can do their kilometres in person at the Robina Town Centre or sign up to virtually ride 10km anywhere in the country.
“Paul and Hayley were passionate supporters of BCNA and the annual Pink Bun campaign in particular, which is why the Queensland team decided to run this event in her honour during the 2024 campaign,” Bakers Delight Joint CEO, Elise Gillespie said. “Ride for Hayley is a demonstration of two networks coming together and proving that distance doesn’t override the strength and compassion within our communities.”
Pink Bun runs 9-29 May, with Bakers Delight bakeries across the country baking their limited-edition Fun Buns to support BCNA. During this time,100% of the sales from every Fun Bun or Fun Bun 6-Pack sold will be donated to BCNA to help it continue to provide Australians affected by breast cancer with the very best information, treatment, and support.
