Relieving Urban Pressures at Saltwater Creek - Help Needed
Starting June 22, OzFish are calling on the Gold Coast community to band together and volunteer their time to restore Saltwater Creek.
What's Happening
OzFish Unlimited, in collaboration with the Council of the City of Gold Coast, is launching a restoration initiative to enhance the fish habitat and overall health of Saltwater Creek.
This project is funded by the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments program.
Why It Matters
Urban development has put immense pressure on Saltwater Creek, which is vital for the local ecosystem and supports significant community, social, and First Nations values.
The restoration efforts will benefit migratory fish and bird species, improve water quality, and support local fishing prospects.
By the Numbers
Two tonnes of litter are to be removed.
One major barrier to fish movement in Saltwater Creek targeted for improvement.
Hundreds of barriers to fish passage in the catchment area.
Local Impact
Saltwater Creek, a popular fishing spot for Gold Coast locals, will see enhanced habitats for species like freshwater mullet, dusky flathead, and yellowfin bream.
The project aims to restore connectivity and improve the health of the waterway, benefiting the entire ecosystem, including Moreton Bay Ramsar Wetland and Moreton Bay Marine Park.
Community Call For Locals To Help
Volunteers are needed for the first community clean-up event on Saturday, 22 June, at Hope Island.
OzFish aims to remove a total of two tonnes of litter from the creek.
