Safer roads ahead: Major Nerang Intersection upgrades
Nerang road upgrades start 11 May 2025, with closures at Panitz Bridge and intersection works set for 4 months.
What’s Happening?
From 11 May 2025, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will commence a $1.9 million upgrade at the intersection of Nerang Connection Road (Ferry Street) and Nerang Street. The upgrades, delivered under the Queensland Government’s Safer Roads Sooner Program, aim to enhance safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians in this high-traffic area.
Why It Matters
The intersection services a key access route to the M1, Nerang State School, and nearby commercial businesses. Increasing traffic volumes and pedestrian use prompted the need for improvements. Andrew Wheeler, TMR’s Regional Director for the South Coast Region, explained:
“This intersection upgrade will deliver safety benefits for local motorists, bicycle riders and pedestrians. The Queensland Government is dedicated to providing a safe environment for pedestrians and motorists, which has been illustrated through the Safer Roads Sooner Program.”
Local Impact
Locals can expect short-term disruptions including night and weekend closures, especially on the Panitz Bridge. However, the long-term benefits include improved safety, smoother traffic flow, and enhanced access for non-motorised road users. Access to the skate park and boat ramp will remain open under traffic control. Pedestrian access across the bridge will also be maintained.
By the Numbers:
$1.9 million allocated for safety improvements at the Nerang intersection.
4 months estimated construction period (weather permitting).
4 specific areas to receive pedestrian fencing: Beaudesert–Nerang Road, Southport–Nerang Road, Nerang Connection Road and White Street.
Zoom In
Key upgrades include:
Traffic signalling optimisation for right-hand turn lanes on Nerang Connection Road.
Dedicated right, left, and through lanes to reduce confusion and congestion.
A new on-road bicycle lane and additional signalised pedestrian crossings.
New wayfinding signage and pavement markings for safer navigation.
Road resurfacing and pedestrian safety fencing along key connecting streets.
Zoom Out
The Safer Roads Sooner Program reflects broader efforts by the Queensland Government to proactively reduce road trauma across the state through targeted upgrades in high-risk areas.
What to Look for Next?
Be prepared for closures on Panitz Bridge on:
14–15 May 2025, nightly from 8pm to 5am.
16–19 May and 23–26 May 2025, full weekend closures from Friday 8pm to Monday 5am.
TMR will keep motorists updated through roadside variable message signs, traffic alerts, and online updates via QLD Traffic. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time during the construction period.
TMR thanks the community for their understanding, support, and cooperation during these essential works.
