School holiday rail works to affect Gold Coast trains
Rail replacement buses will support Gold Coast and Beenleigh passengers during major works from 27 June to 19 July.

What’s Happening?
Customers on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast train lines are being urged to plan ahead, with extended track closures set to affect travel from 27 June to 19 July.
The closures will allow crews to complete crucial work safely inside the rail corridor. Most of the disruption has been timed during the school holiday period, when fewer passengers usually travel on the network.
Rail replacement buses will keep customers moving while trains are not running through affected sections of the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines.
The works form part of several major rail projects now underway across South East Queensland. These include station and stabling yard upgrades for Cross River Rail, new digital signalling between Beenleigh and Varsity Lakes, early works for the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project, and construction linked to the Loganlea Station Relocation project.
Acting Head of Translink Dean Helm said the closures were needed to support long-term improvements across the rail network.
“These track closures allow important work to be undertaken on several projects that are critical to improving access to some of the fastest-growing locations around South East Queensland,” Mr Helm said.
Why It Matters?
The works will affect people travelling for work, appointments, school holiday plans, and major events. Passengers using the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines will see the largest changes, while several other lines will also have altered services on selected dates.
Mr Helm said the works must happen while trains are not running.
“Significant works like these need to take place in the rail corridor and so can only be carried out safely and efficiently while trains are not running,” he said.
“If you are travelling during this period, whether that’s to work, an appointment or a major event, I encourage you to plan ahead, consider your transport options, and allow plenty of travel time.”
He said Translink understood the inconvenience caused by extended closures, but the timing was chosen to reduce disruption where possible.
“We understand extended track closures can be an inconvenience to customers. This is why we have coordinated work across multiple projects to be undertaken at the same time to help minimise the period of the disruption,” Mr Helm said.
“While there is never a good time for track closures, conducting the majority of the work over the school holiday period will minimise the impact as less customers travel on the network at this time.
“We will ensure plenty of rail replacement bus services are available providing connections to help customers complete their journeys.”
By the Numbers
Four major rail project areas will use the closure period, giving crews one coordinated window to complete works across several parts of the network.
Seven rail lines are listed with impacts across the works period, including Beenleigh, Gold Coast, Airport, Ferny Grove, Doomben, Cleveland, and Shorncliffe.
Three trip-planning options are available to customers: the Translink app, translink.com.au, and 13 12 30.
Local Impact
For Gold Coast passengers, the most important change is the use of rail replacement buses between key sections of the line.
From 20 June to 5 July, buses will replace trains between Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road on selected dates. From 6 July to 19 July, the replacement bus section changes to Boggo Road and Banoon.
During the second part of the closure period, Beenleigh and Gold Coast line trains will run as a combined all-stops service between Varsity Lakes and Banoon. There will be minor timetable changes and no express trains.
Airport, Ferny Grove, Doomben, Cleveland, and Shorncliffe passengers may also be affected at different points, with some services terminating earlier or linking with other lines.
Zoom In
Crews will use the closure period to progress works across several parts of the rail network.
The Cross River Rail works include stabling yard and station upgrades, commissioning key signalling assets at Clapham Yard, construction at Moorooka station, and services and overhead line equipment installation in the Yeerongpilly to Moorooka corridor.
On the Gold Coast, works will also continue at Merrimac Station.
Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said the work formed part of the wider rail program, beyond the new underground tunnels and stations.
“Crews will be busy out in the rail corridor to make the most of the opportunity alongside other major projects to work safely and efficiently while trains aren’t running,” Mr Newton said.
“Critical works will be underway across the network, including commissioning key signalling assets at Clapham Yard, construction of Moorooka station, and services and overhead line equipment installation in the Yeerongpilly-Moorooka corridor.
“On the Gold Coast, work will also be underway at Merrimac station.”
Zoom Out
The closures sit within a broader rail upgrade program across South East Queensland, as the Queensland Government works on projects aimed at improving future network capacity and reliability.
The coordinated closure period means several projects can progress at the same time, rather than causing separate disruptions on different dates.
However, the release also notes that arrangements may change due to ongoing union Protected Industrial Action by Queensland Rail staff. Any changes will be communicated to customers with as much notice as possible.
What To Look For Next?
Train services on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines are expected to recommence on 19 July.
Customers should check their trip before travelling, especially if they are using affected lines during the school holidays. Trips can be planned through the Translink app, translink.com.au, or by calling 13 12 30.
