Small Steps, Big Impact: Walk safely to School Day
On 16 May, National Walk Safely to School Day returns to promote healthy habits, road safety, and less traffic for kids.
What’s happening?
Primary school children across Australia will lace up their sneakers for National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 16 May 2025. Now in its 26th year, the event, led by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, encourages walking to school as a healthy, environmentally friendly habit. It’s not too late for schools and families to get involved.
Why it matters
Walking to school benefits more than just physical health. The initiative boosts academic performance, promotes road safety, and reduces traffic congestion near schools. It also encourages families to reconsider their transport habits for a cleaner environment.
“This is an opportunity for young people to lead active, healthy lives,” said Harold Scruby, CEO of the Pedestrian Council of Australia. “We should encourage them to take a walk before school, during and at end of their day.”
Scruby added, “Until they are 10, children must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road.”
Local Impact
Gold Coast schools are expected to join the national movement, with parents, teachers, and P&Cs encouraged to organise Healthy Breakfasts to support children participating. The day also aims to cut car-dependency by encouraging public transport use and walking, helping reduce school drop-off congestion.
By the Numbers
1 in 4 children in Australia face critical levels of childhood obesity (ABS 2017–18).
Kids need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
The event reaches primary schools across Australia, promoting action beyond just one day.
Zoom In
On the Gold Coast, schools and parents can take part by organising walks and breakfast events, starting small but creating lasting habits.
