Teenager arrested after knives seized at Helensvale
Gold Coast police arrested a 14-year-old after two knives were seized during school holiday patrols
What’s happening?
Gold Coast police have arrested a 14-year-old Pimpama boy after allegedly finding two knives during a proactive wanding operation at Helensvale train station.
The incident happened about 2 pm on 6 July, when officers were conducting checks as part of Operation Luminous. The operation is targeting crime hotspots and public transport hubs across the Gold Coast during the school holidays.
Police said officers approached a group of male teenagers at the station. It will be alleged that one boy indicated he was carrying a knife.
During a search, police allegedly found a folding knife concealed in the boy’s waistband. Officers also allegedly found a sheathed fishing knife attached to his left hip.
Both knives were seized, and the boy was arrested. He was dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act for possession or use of a dangerous article.
Why it matters?
The arrest comes during a high-visibility policing push across the Gold Coast, with officers focusing on places where families, commuters and young people gather during the school holidays.
Operation Luminous forms part of ongoing proactive policing and community engagement work under Operation Forge. That state-wide initiative targets property crime and serious repeat offenders.
Police said the Gold Coast operation is designed to deter offending, detect weapons and maintain a visible presence in busy public areas. Officers are being deployed to transport hubs, shopping centres and central business districts as part of the school holiday response.
Superintendent Brett Jackson said the operation was focused on ensuring people could safely enjoy public spaces during the break.
“Operation Luminous provides a highly visible police presence in areas where families, commuters and young people gather during the school holidays,” Superintendent Jackson said.
“Every knife removed from a public place is one less weapon that has the potential to cause serious harm.
“Our officers will continue conducting proactive wanding operations, engaging with the community and taking enforcement action where necessary to help keep the Gold Coast safe.”
Local Impact
For Gold Coast residents, the operation means police will remain active in some of the district’s busiest public spaces throughout the school holidays.
Helensvale train station is one of the key locations included in the operation, alongside shopping centres and central business districts. These areas attract strong foot traffic during the break, especially from families, commuters and teenagers.
Police said Operation Luminous is not only about enforcement. Officers are also speaking with the community, carrying out street checks and maintaining a visible presence in places where concerns can arise quickly.
By the numbers
Since 27 June, officers involved in Operation Luminous have conducted 372 wandings across the Gold Coast.
Police said those checks included 245 juveniles and 127 adults during the school holiday operation.
Officers have also completed 224 street checks, 72 shopping centre walkthroughs and more than 400 community engagements.
The operation has resulted in two knives being seized, with nine offenders charged with a total of 12 offences.
