Two months after a deadly tornado tore through the Gold Coast’s northern suburbs on Christmas Day, the clean-up is nearing completion.
The tornado claimed one life and destroyed four homes, while a further 105 homes were severely damaged, 325 were moderately damaged, and 386 had minor damage.
The damage was particularly severe in the northern suburbs of Helensvale, Oxenford, Maudsland, Wongawallan, Upper Coomera and Willow Vale, The City of Gold Coast says the cleanup is now 90 per cent complete, with debris collected from 1600 streets.
The rest of the clean-up, concentrated on parks and reserves, is set to be finished by the end of March. So far, 60,000 metric tonnes of mulch are now at the Suntown tip and are being given away to residents while the council is providing grants for homeowners who need to pay contractors to remove fallen.
