Traffic blackspot claims another victim
Emergency crews were called to Tamborine Oxenford Road in Wongawallan at 6.45am after reports of a serious crash near the historic Fox & Hounds Hotel on Elevation Drive.
Emergency workers found a truck had lost control and flipped, trapping the driver behind the wheel. The man could not be saved and died at the scene.
Police who are investigating the cause, have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or has any relevant camera footage to contact police.
Tamborine Oxenford Road, one of four major roads connecting to the popular tourist destination Mount Tamborine, has been plagued with crashes during the past decade.
In recent months, there was a two-vehicle crash on March 19; on February 20, a truck travelling down from the mountain suffered a brake failure and crashed; in
August last year an 80 woman died on the road at Wongawallan when her car collied with a truck.
Queensland’s Main Roads Department has started upgrading the one of the traffic blackspots at junction of Tamborine Oxenford Road and Michigan Drive.
The $2 million upgrade is to include the installation of traffic lights, road widening and a new turning lane into Georgina St.
Member for Theodore Mark Boothman said Tamborine Oxenford Road was a mountain road that was not designed to carrying the amount of traffic that it now was.
He said he been calling for progress for the Interregional Transport Corridor that would connect Yarrabilba to Ormeau since 2015.
“Unfortunately the interregional transport corridor has just been sitting on the Transport Main Roads to do list for years,’’ said Mr Boothman.
“It definitely needs to be done so the traffic that is coming down the road from the western side of Mount Tamborine would not have to do it any more.”
