1. One Big Thing: Jetstar announces Gold Coast links to Top End
By Marshall Hall
What’s Happening: Jetstar is launching direct seasonal flights between the Gold Coast and Darwin, running multiple times a week from June 26 to October 24 2025, with the move cutting out layovers, making travel between the NT and SEQ faster and cheaper.
Why It Matters: A direct link between these two tourism hotspots boosts connectivity in two high-traffic destinations, drives visitor numbers, and strengthens local economies.
By the Numbers
• 4 direct flights per week is what will kick off the link
• June 26 – October 24 2025 is seasonal operation of the new flights
• Gold Coast Airport alone contributes $3.5 billion to the economy annually
Local Impact: More visitors mean more dollars for Gold Coast businesses, from hotels to theme parks, bars, golf resorts and beyond.
What The People Say
“Eliminating the need for stopovers makes it much easier and more affordable.” – Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully
“More convenient travel options bring significant economic and tourism boosts.” – QAL CEO Amelia Evans

3. 5G phone tower plan sparks body corporate brawl
By Marshall Hall
What’s Happening: A bitter body corporate battle is brewing at Palm Beach’s Regency on the Beach, with residents split over a proposal to extend a 10-year lease for existing mobile phone towers and upgrade them to 5G.
Why It Matters: The debate raises concerns over property values, health risks, and transparency, highlighting the growing tensions between tech expansion and resident rights.
By the Numbers
• 68 apartments are in the building at present
• $620,000 – price paid for a one-bedroom unit by an opposing owner
• 75% support is required to pass the special resolution in its currently proposed format
Local Impact: The outcome could set a precedent for other Gold Coast high-rises and apartment blocks, with body corporates navigating the balance between connectivity upgrades and community and resident concerns.
Signal Lost: Even if residents block the proposal, the Telecommunications Act 1997 could override their decision—potentially locking them into the lease for another decade.
What The People Say
“This is a fight for property rights, transparency, and community well-being.” – Resident Shelley Graham
“Owners were led to believe they would have a vote, yet negotiations were conducted behind closed doors.” – Shelley Graham
What To Look For Next: A Friday vote will decide the lease’s fate, but with the body corporate up for re-election next month, this battle is far from over.
