1. One Big Thing: Brumby’s Bakery on chopping block as RFG posts loss
What’s Happening: Retail Food Group (RFG), the Robina-based franchisor behind Doughnut King and Gloria Jeans, is weighing up a sale of Brumby’s Bakery after posting a $14.98 million group-wide loss for the financial year 24–25.
Why It Matters: Although Brumby’s didn't incur a direct loss of that magnitude, a multi-million dollar write-down on its value significantly impacted RFG's overall result.
Consequently, the company is now signalling a shift of focus from heritage brands to high-growth ventures, such as Beefy’s Pies.
By The Numbers
Brumby’s was purchased by RFG back in 2007
RFG Group is Australia’s largest multi-brand retail food franchise owner with around 1,250 outlets in 30 countries
$14.98 million: Was RFG’s group net loss in FY24-25
$12.2 million: Was Brumby’s brand value write-down
Freshly Baked Priorities: While Brumby’s faces an uncertain future, RFG is full steam ahead with Beefy’s Pies, which recorded a 16.6% sales boost and added five new stores.
The group is also preparing to launch 165 US-born Firehouse Subs outlets from 2026.
What They Said
“Brumby’s Bakery has been assessed against our strategic growth pillars and, given our other growth priorities, we are investigating options for divestment in FY26,’’ the company said.
