1. One Big Thing: More than $700,000 cash confiscated at Gold Coast Airport
What’s Happening: The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has confiscated hundreds of thousands of dollars that was found across several bags carried by a family at Gold Coast Airport during a money laundering investigation.
A Victorian man claimed ownership of the cash and later pleaded guilty to a Commonwealth offence.
Why It Matters: Investigators could not establish a legitimate source for the money. Confiscating it removes the financial benefit linked to suspected criminal activity and prevents the funds from supporting further offences.
By the Numbers
The Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce obtained restraint and forfeiture orders on 23 July 2026 for $712,850 seized by the AFP at Gold Coast Airport on 13 March 2024.
The Victorian man received three years’ imprisonment and was immediately released on a $5,000 recognisance (a formal promise made to a court to guarantee future good behaviour or an appearance at a trial).
Local Impact: The case began at Gold Coast Airport after the AFP received intelligence about a person allegedly travelling with a large amount of cash.
It shows the airport’s role in interstate investigations into suspected criminal proceeds.
From Airport Bags to Court: Police allege the cash was divided among several bags carried by family members, where a 36-year-old man later claimed the money and pleaded guilty on 5 June 2026.
The AFP-led Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce secured court orders covering the entire amount.

“Asset confiscation is important to remove the financial benefit gained from criminal acts, including money laundering.
“The profits derived from criminal activity are often used to fund further criminal acts, which is why the AFP works closely with its partners in the CACT to target the proceeds of crime and ensure it is re-invested to benefit the community.”
Where the Money Goes: The confiscated cash will enter the Commonwealth’s Confiscated Assets Account, which funds crime prevention, community intervention and law enforcement programs.
2. Cadets unite for challenge at Kokoda Barracks in Canungra
What’s Happening: Cadets from Australia and New Zealand gathered at Kokoda Barracks in Canungra for the 2026 Chief of Army Cadet Team Challenge, held from 6 to 11 July.
Teams completed military-style activities that tested leadership, teamwork, decision-making and resilience in a safe and controlled setting.
Why It Matters: The challenge gives cadets a national setting to apply the skills developed during regular training. Performance is based on how well teams communicate, solve problems and support each other under pressure.
By the Numbers
170 cadets took part, including 160 Australians and 10 members of the New Zealand Cadet Forces.
Teams of 10 completed physical, mental and problem-solving activities requiring shared planning and clear communication.
Six days of competition ran from 6 to 11 July, with the ceremony held on 10 July.
Teamwork Under Pressure: Thirteen Australian Army Cadet teams competed alongside representatives from the Australian Navy Cadets, Australian Air Force Cadets and New Zealand Cadet Forces.
Success required more than physical fitness, with Cadets having to assess unfamiliar situations, make quick decisions and use the strengths of every team member while staying focused under pressure.
South Queensland Brigade claimed the Chief of Army Trophy, followed by South Australia Brigade in second place and the New Zealand Cadet Forces in third.

3. Queensland records first H5 bird flu detection
What’s Happening: Queensland has recorded its first confirmed case of H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza after a dead petrel found on Moreton Island tested positive.
Why It Matters: The CSIRO Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness confirmed the result, with no cases detected in poultry and no evidence of large-scale animal deaths across the state.
The result confirms the virus has reached Queensland following detections among wild seabirds in Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales.

More than 1,000 reports: Queensland residents have contacted the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline since the first Australian case was confirmed.
Local Impact: People living on or visiting Moreton Island should avoid contact with sick or dead birds and keep children and pets away from affected wildlife.
Sightings should be recorded and reported immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
Eyes on the Flyway: Queensland has increased surveillance across the state as authorities watch for further cases among migrating seabirds and other wildlife.
Public reporting will remain an important part of tracking the virus and responding quickly to possible new detections.
What The People Say: Authorities said Queensland had prepared for its arrival, with surveillance, laboratory testing and emergency animal disease response arrangements already in place.
“We have known that a H5 bird flu detection in Queensland was a matter of when, not if,” Department of Primary Industries Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Allison Crook said. “This confirmed positive result has not impacted our poultry sector or native wildlife.”
“We have further escalated our surveillance program throughout the state, and are delivering heightened H5 bird flu awareness and engagement activities to ensure industries and communities know what to do,” she said.
