1. One Big Thing: Billionaire Bruce bounces $100m into Bally’s Starship
By Marshall Hall
What’s Happening: Pubs billionaire Bruce Mathieson is throwing millions more into The Star Entertainment Group, teaming up with US casino giant Bally’s to deliver a $300 million rescue package.
Why It Matters: The Star, operator of casinos in the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sydney, employs over 9,000 people and has been spiralling since a money-laundering scandal rocked the business in 2021.
By the Numbers
• 💰 $100 million: Bruce Mathieson’s latest mega investment.
• 🏢 9,000+: Is the number of people that Star Entertainment Group employs across Australia.
• 📉 $15 million: Fines slapped on The Star for regulatory breaches.
Local Impact: While the Star Gold Coast remains open—for now, the $100m injection will help delay licence suspensions and, at least in the meantime, save local jobs amid serious scrutiny.
Raising the Stakes: Mathieson’s move limits Bally’s share grab and boosts his own stake beyond the 10% he already had.
What the People Say
Way back in 2022 Queensland inquiry found that Star was “unsuitable to hold a licence”.
What To Look For Next
With Star Entertainment Group shares suspended since Monday, March 3, after the company failed to lodge its half-year report before the market's deadline, all eyes turn to what happens next.
2.
Safety Bureau releases report into fatal helicopter crash
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has released 28 findings after an investigation into the midair collision of two Gold Coast helicopters that left four people dead.

The Weekly Dream Gig
This week – Love ‘em or loathe ‘em, the trams are here to stay on the GC – and so is this big-ticket gig.
GoldlinQ needs a Commercial Manager – Operations to keep the Gold Coast Light Rail gliding smoothly across Stages 1 and 2 (and pitch in on Stage 3, and hopefully Stage 4, when needed).
If multimillion-dollar contracts, PPPs, and stakeholder wrangling are your comfort zone, this Broadbeach-based role reports to the COO and comes with serious responsibility – and serious reward.
We’re talking $210,000.00–$235,000.00 a year, one day WFH, and a front-row seat to one of Queensland’s most talked-about infrastructure projects 🚃.
4. Stoked Exhibition splashes into Currumbin
What’s Happening: Stoked Exhibition hits Dust Temple on May 4 as part of the Flotsam Festival, celebrating surf art, photography and film with an opening night featuring tapas, live music, panel talks, and a screening of Waves of Paradise hosted by its creator, Gordo the Great.
Why It Matters: In addition to it being a cultural and conservation showcase, rallying the coast to protect surfing ecosystems through creativity— the event will also be raising funds for local Coolangatta lad Jaggar Bartholomew’s GoFundMe after he was diagnosed with the extremely rare condition known as Nervus Intermedius Neuralgia, which cruelly features excruciating pain 24/7.
By the Numbers
• 🏄 16km: Is the stretch of the Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve.
• 🎥 1990s: Era of Waves of Paradise.
• 🖼️ 5 collector’s items up for auction.
Local Impact: $10 gets you tapas, tunes, and a tangible way to support local surf legends and causes on the night.
Riding the Culture Current: Stoked is part of the Flotsam Festival, a larger regional surf culture celebration.
The event leads into the 10-year anniversary of GCWSR in 2026, alongside the World Surfing Conservation Conference, drawing international attention to the region’s environmental leadership.
What the People Say
“We are super stoked to be part of the 2025 Flotsam Festival and like to thank Caz and her mighty Flotsam Team for pulling this massive awesome program together!” said Andrew McKinnon (aka AndyMac).
