1. One Big Thing: Gilmour Space launches satellite into orbit with SpaceX
By Marshall Hall
What’s Happening: Gold Coast space company Gilmour Space Technologies has confirmed that it has teamed up with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to successfully launch a satellite into orbit.
Why It Matters: The satellite, launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-14 mission in June, has been orbiting ever since and is carrying a hyperspectral imager from CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency.
By The Numbers:
A 100kg satellite launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-14 in June
It will be able to carry up to 30kg of payload
The satellite will be compatible with multiple rockets, including Gilmour’s own Eris launcher
What They Said:
“This is a proud moment for our team and partners,” said Mark Grimminck, Head of Satellites at Gilmour Space.
“ElaraSat MMS-1 is designed for multiple missions, and this first flight shows how Australia can build expertise in sovereign satellite technology while paving the way for future missions.”
Local Impact: Designed and built on the Gold Coast, the satellite is a milestone for Queensland’s space industry and, once again, positions Gilmour Space as a serious player in global markets.
What To Look For Next: With this successful endeavour, Gilmour Space aims to deliver full-stack satellite missions for commercial, civil, and defence sectors, all from Australian soil.

Have your say on the future of Wave Break
Wave Break Island, once the proposed site of a casino and cruise ship terminal, is now being touted as possible eco-tourism destination.
The Gold Coast Waterways Authority is calling on Gold Coasters to have their say on the future of the popular boating destination.
In its Wave Break Island Feasibility Study, the Gold Coast Waterways Authority says the man-made island could soon feature new jetties and pontoons as well as camping sites and cabins.
3. O’Callaghan joins Tweed Seagulls on two-year coaching deal
What’s Happening: Tweed Seagulls RLFC have named Joe O’Callaghan as their new Hostplus Cup head coach on a two-year deal.
Why It Matters: Starting mid to late October 2025 after relocating from Sydney, O’Callaghan brings elite coaching credentials and a strong record of success to the Seagulls.
By The Numbers:
At South Sydney Rabbitohs, held roles including NRL Assistant Coach and NSW Cup Head Coach.
In 2014, led Northern Pride to QLD Cup and NRL State Championship titles.
In 2023, steered the Rabbitohs to both NSW Cup and NRL State Championship victories.
What They Said
CEO Brendon Lindsay:
“Joe’s passion, knowledge, and people-first approach stood out. We’re excited to support him in embedding his rugby league philosophies at our club.”
Local Impact: O’Callaghan’s appointment is a bold step forward. Players across the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers can expect renewed focus on development, performance and culture.
What To Look For Next: Planning is already underway for a smooth October transition ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Qld wins Super Silly Sausage Award
By King Cane Toad, guest contributor.
Congratulations to the Crisafulli Government for winning our inaugural Super Silly Sausage Awards.
And the State Government should seriously savour the taste of its Silly Sausage victory, especially given the tough competition it has had in Australia this week.
I mean we have had the irony of neo-nazis attacking Aborigines after an after anti-immigration rally, former Victorian premier Dan Andrews allowing himself to be treated as a political puppet at a military parade in China, and Brisbane Broncos star Reece Walsh posting on social media images of himself drinking toilet water.
All were serious contenders to take out the award until Deputy premier Jarrod Bleijie uttered the phrase, “We will not build light rail stage four”.
